Jared from Subway facing severe penalties for internet solicitation and child pornography

In 2000, the world came to know Jared Fogle as an inspirational figure who 245 pounds utilizing a diet and exercise regimen centered around Subway sandwiches. Established in 1965, Subway is a huge restaurant chain with thousands of franchises throughout the world and more than 26,000 locations in the United States alone. With the revelation that an ordinary citizen achieved such a task with Subway sandwiches, the chain embarked on a new marketing scheme focused almost entirely on Jared's story. “Jared from Subway” quickly became a household name instantly recognizable by millions of people.

In the last month or so, Jared from Subway has become infamous for an entirely different and distressing reason. After months of investigation, the U.S. Attorney's Office formally charged Fogle with

  • Engaging in internet solicitation with minors
  • Paying minors to engage in sexually explicit acts
  • Receiving and distributing child pornography

These acts occurred over several years from 2007 through 2015. Court documents also reveal the Fogle engaged in these acts as part of a scheme with a former business partner. As part of plea deal, Fogle is expected to plead guilty and pay $1.4 million in restitution to 14 different victims. This restitution is designed to cover the victims' costs associated with counseling, support and treatment to cope with their experiences.

Recent statistics indicate that arrests for internet solicitation crimes, such as those committed by Fogle, have tripled over the last 10 to 15 years. Many states, including Tennessee, have specific laws prohibiting the use of any type of electronic means to solicit or engage in sexual acts with minors. Law enforcement agencies often orchestrate specific stings designed to catch individuals engaged in internet solicitation.
